The shape of it

VCA’s code catalog was powerful — and painful.

VCA is a massive veterinary hospital network with thousands of locations and codes covering pricing, prescriptions, diagnostics, and lab work. CodeCatalog managed it all — but searching was frustrating, filters didn’t exist, and people wasted time.

I led the usability redesign of advanced search: interviews, paper prototyping for filter models, and moderated testing to validate multi-select logic and saved-query flows.

    Early exploration

    Talked to catalog admins, pharmacy leads, and vet ops managers. Their wishlist: filters that actually helped, visible search criteria, and saved searches for recurring Monday tasks.

  2. 02

    Design like we meant it

    Paper sketches first. V1 dropdowns felt like patchwork. V2 accordions needed too many clicks. Final model: stacked Category / Field / Value rows, active chips, easy column view.

  3. 03

    Test before pixel-perfect

    Moderated sessions with real users. “This feels like Google Sheets but smarter.” Sticky pagination and persistent filter tags shipped from those sessions.

    What’s next

    Exploring AI-driven filter suggestions, usage analytics, and guided onboarding with tooltips.

Inspiration

Borrowed Azure DevOps power. Dropped the intimidation.

ADO’s clause-based query builder is the industry standard for complex filters. I kept Field + Operator + Value — then redesigned it for hospital admins who aren’t developers.

Result: readable rows, multi-select chips, and a Save Filters path instead of a dense technical table.
